Discipline 05 · How Compass Works

ARC™

How does the system keep improving without us?

Continuous renewal — Assess, Refine, Continue — running across all five disciplines and transferred to the client's own leaders.

Why it exists

Every operating system decays unless renewal is designed into it. ARC™ is the renewal engine: a disciplined rhythm of assessing what the system is producing, refining what no longer fits, and continuing what is proven.

ARC™ runs across the whole Compass Operating System rather than inside any one discipline, and it is the mechanism by which ownership of the architecture transfers to the client.

The SIPOC of this area

Suppliers, inputs, process, outputs, customers.

Suppliers

Who provides what this area needs

  • Every discipline owner — FOUNDATION through GROW
  • Frontline teams closest to the work
  • Compass architect during transfer

Inputs

What comes in

  • Scorecard results and variance
  • Audit, review, and after-action findings
  • Customer and employee evidence
  • Improvement ideas raised in the cadence

Process

The work, in sequence

  • Assess — measure what the system actually produced
  • Refine — correct the design, not the people
  • Continue — standardize and teach what is proven
  • Review in a fixed rhythm at every level
  • Transfer ownership of the rhythm to client leaders

Outputs

What comes out

  • A standing improvement rhythm with owners
  • Documented standards that reflect current best practice
  • An after-action record for each cycle
  • Client-owned capability to renew the system

Customers

Who receives it

  • Client leaders who now own the architecture
  • Customers, through steadily better delivery
  • Ownership, through durable performance

How you know it is working

  • Improvements happen on rhythm, not in response to crisis
  • Standards change because evidence changed
  • Compass can step back without performance stepping back
